The University of Lima (Spanish: Universidad de Lima) is a university in Lima, the capital of Peru. It was founded in 1962. The decision to create the University of Lima was made in the early1960s by a group of university professors, along with important commerce and industry representatives. It started with only 120 students in a small campus in the Jesús María District. Due to theuniversity's quick growth, the campus in the Monterrico area of Surco was inaugurated to serve the university's space needs.
Today, the University of Lima has 10,470 students, ten schools, a postgraduateschool, a general studies program and a scientific research institute, along with many services for students, faculty, and the community at large.
The Pontifical Catholic University ofPeru, founded in Lima in 1917, is our nation’s number one university, one of the twenty-five best universities in Latin America and the only Peruvian university to be listed among the top five-hundreduniversities in the world in the international rankings. This placement is recognition of the quality of its education, research, publications, social responsibility, contribution to culture andindisputable institutional and academic leadership. None of this would be possible without the continuing efforts of all those who together comprise this institution: its professors, students, generalstaff and graduates.
As authorities, we have the responsibility of continuing this undertaking, as we continue the course set forth in the Institutional Strategic Plan, and of aiming to ensure thatthe Catholic University solidifies its academic leadership, enhances its international recognition and continues its service to Peruvian society. To achieve this, we must build on our strengths andpotentials and strive to address those areas in which we are weak or which could be improved.
