Tips on Reading Aloud

1. Remember, reading is interpretation. The words must communicate someone else’s ideas. The standard for good oral reading is not only that the audience hears all of thewords, but that they receive all of the ideas.

2. The role of the reader is interpreter – translator:

author reader audience

(creator of ideas) (translator of ideas)(recipient of ideas)



3. Become familiar with the selection you are reading. Think about its meaning. Ask the following questions:

a. What does the author seem to be saying on the surface?

b.Is that what he/she really means or is there more to it?

c. How does he/she feel about the message?

d. What does he/she want the audience to remember?

e. What emotions or attitudes doeshe/she want the reader to feel during each part of the message?

4. Study the words in the selection; check the dictionary if you do not know the meaning of a word or if you are unsure how topronounce it, ask someone.

5. Be careful not to read too fast. Think about the images as you read them; this will help you slow down. Try to paint a visual picture for the audience.

6. Have as much eyecontact as you can – you should be looking at your audience more than you are looking at your paper. You cannot pick this selection up the night before; you will need to practice.

7. Put a lot ofvariety into your reading – vary pitch, rate, inflection, and volume to get across the desired image or mood. Underline words that you want to stress or in places where you want to slow down.

8.Don’t forget to pause for emphasis or dramatic effect – pause before or after words and phrases you really want to stress. (Again, this is a great reason to use a red pen and write on the paper you arereading from.)

9. Project your voice so that you will be heard but also so you will sound confident and energetic.

10. Speak clearly. Enunciate each word – put endings on words – try not to run...
