Air Pollution in the United Kingdom
“Dieu et mon droit! (God and my right)” The British holler their motto with excitement in United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. United Kingdom is one of the great places to visit, located in north-west of the European continent between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. How is the weather up there? “Generally mild and temperate; weather issubject to frequent changes but not often to temperature extremes.” This is the home of Queen Elizabeth II, the English breakfast, and the great “Loch Ness Monster”. Also the British tea that is consumed more per capita than anyone else in the world! Plus the ridiculous law about it is illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day. Although United Kingdom is a magnificent country to visit, it has animmensely colossal impact of air pollution because it is causing health problems, a massive issue to the regime, and it is an effect to the environment.
The main cause of air pollution of United Kingdom is the massive human-made sources that are stationary fuel combustion, and transport. In urban areas, vehicles are used massively, and the fume and smoke coming from the vehicles causecontamination to the air. Another cause is the factories that release more of a gigantic amount of contamination to the sky, and a plentiful of places that are known for coal and fossil fuel use. The air pollution is ozone, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide. Not only do factories and urban areas cause air contamination but so does agriculture garbage like primarily livestock manure, fertilizers, andsmall proportion derived from variety of sources as transport and waste disposal. “Since the middle of the 19th century, the atmosphere of the major British cities was regularly polluted by coal smoke in winter, giving rise to an infamous mixture of fog and smoke known as smog. Today the emphasis has shifted from the pollution problems caused by industry to the ones associated with motor vehicleemissions.” The article from air pollution, “History of air pollution in the UK” says about the cause of all of it.
The air pollution mainly affects the inflammatory systems and the respiratory systems and the consequence could lead to more serious conditions such as heart diseases and lung cancer. For example when breathing the contaminated air, it might cause a human life expectancy be shortened(seven to eight months).in hotspots of air pollution like London, can be shortening life expectancy about nine years! In the article Healthy air, “UK Deaths from Air Pollution as High as Reported During The 1952 ‘Great Smog” says about “29,000 people die prematurely each year, on average 11.5 years early, because of long term exposure to air pollution, latest Government figures show, nearly 5% ofall annual UK deaths.” A study has also suggested that walking in a bad location of air pollution can feel like smoking sixty lighted cigarettes. The worst affection to people can be pregnant women, babies, and people who have asthma. Children are more sensitive to the effects of lead pollution than adults, and a child's intelligence may suffer.
To the environment, air pollution also affectsplants and wildlife for it is why it is greatly difficult for plants to thrive in city centers. There could be that pollutants get into animals’ food and water. “Air pollution causes damage to plants and animals, affecting biodiversity and crop yields. Defra has a number of research projects investigating the effects of air pollution on vegetation and ecosystems.” (This is from the article Defra,“What are the effects of air pollution?”) Some of the research Defra has made is; the Black Carbon Network, Air pollution quality and Stratospheric Ozone. What mainly happens is sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides make water and soil more harmful, causing severely harm to animals and plants. Drastically, it can also reduce the amount of plants that provide food and shelter, causing critical...
