What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementiain older people. A dementia is a medical condition that disrupts the way the brain works. Alzheimer´s affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. Although the riskof getting the disease increases with age, it is not a normal part of aging. At present the cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.
Alzheimer´s disease is named after Dr. AloisAlzheimer, a German psychiatrist. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer described changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. He found abnormal deposits and tangled bundles of nervefibers. These plaques and tangles in the brain have come to be characteristic brain changes due to Alzheimer´s Disease.
The AD presents symptoms like start confusing names, simple mathematicalproblems, have problems with speak, change of humor and behavior changes are the most notable.
The AD is can be classified in 4 steps that are:
* Predementia
* Early
* Moderate
*Advanced
Advanced:
During the final stage of AD, the person is completely dependent upon caregivers. Language is reduced to simple phrases or even single words, eventually leading to complete lossof speech. Despite the loss of verbal language abilities, people can often understand and return emotional signals. Although aggressiveness can still be present, extreme apathy and exhaustion are muchmore common results. Muscle mass and mobility deteriorate to the point where they are bedridden, and they lose the ability to feed themselves. AD is a terminal illness, with the cause of death...
