Today, high school students are not only worried about their grades and whether  they are going to get good qualifications in order to get a better job, they are also worried about how to “survive” in the school’s world, how to deal with their peers and the different cliques.
Bullying – the act of repeated aggressive behavior in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically ormentally and has power over him/her -is constantly present at schools. There is a growing body of research which indicates that individuals who are persistently subjected to abusive behavior are at risk of stress related illness which can sometimes lead to suicide.
The story of the film “Bang bang! You’re dead” centers on Trevor Adams, a misunderstood student known as the “mad bomb” after beingarrested for his attempt to blow up the school and threaten the school football team. The threats began because Trevor was trash canned in the cafeteria in front of the whole school so he decided to take revenge. He was harassed, avoided, and bullied by teachers and students, who believed he was the reason for the installation of a metal detector at the school door and a zero tolerance policy.Trevor’s theater teacher, Mr. Val Duncan, casts him in a controversial play “Bang Bang! You’re dead”. It is a one act play written by William Mastrosimone in 1999 to raise awareness of school violence and its causes. Trevor performs the main character, Josh, a high school student who murders his parents and five classmates then the ghosts of those classmates demand to know why he had killed them. Theplays takes place in his jail cell, after he has committed homicide, it ends when Josh commits suicide.
As everybody knows, the school is the first big organization you will have had to deal with. As a student, you are what the organization is supposed to be.
At Rivervale High School there is a hierarchy which includes: jocks, trogs, cheerleaders, druggies, stoners, deadheads, burnouts, hippies, skateboarders, nerds, techies, floaters. The unequal status between the cliques describes what privileges and rights it have each group and breeds prejudice. Because of this, the Jocks were abusive towards the Trogs, and for protection, students such as Trevor, for example, put on a dangerous act -the bomb- so kids will leave him alone. This is the self-fulfilling prophecy, as Mr.Duncan would say, “when you label a kid at risk, you´ll create a kid at risk”. Trevor describes his feelings about being called “Trash can” saying: “They give you a name. The name does something for you, it alters your molecules, and one day you wake up, and you look in the mirror and you don’t recognize yourself anymore because, you believe them. They win, you lose. And then one day, they say thatname and you hear something go snap. You realize what you got to do; you got to take back your name, and you’ve got to do it in front of the whole school because that’s where they took your name away from you. You have to do it so every kid can remember”. In Trevor’s definition of the self-fulfilling prophecy, he confirms its effects on him by referring to the attack of the Jocks as a way ofbecoming into who he once was. Trevor became the “mad bomber” and “trash can” because he and everybody at school had believed the label his peers gave him. Becoming the “mad bomber” sent him to the bottom of the class system, and he began to identify with the Trogs, who were also the outcasts of the school.
Another example of stereotyping is reflected in a dialogue between Trevor and a Police officerduring his interrogation: COP: “Why do you bring a camera to school every day, Trevor?” Trevor: “The same reason you bring a gun to work, to shoot people.” Mr. Duncan: “Trevor, just because they cast you as the bad guy doesn’t mean you have to play the part”. In this case, Trevor has the attitude that is expected of him.
Prejudice begins with prejudiced attitudes: Parents, teachers, and...
