A brief research and analysis of some pieces of Postcolonial literature had been made in order to suggest the suitable shorts stories for the advanced language class. The selected texts are accurateportrayals of the postcolonial period. Country Lovers, by Nadine Gordimer and Marriage is private affairs by Chinua Achebe provide glimpses that would help students to understand the contexts, thecultural identities, and the reality of that relevant part of the world history.
On the one hand, Country Lovers, by Nadine Gordimer is a piece of writing that perfectly describes othering in SouthAfrica, where the natives were marginalized, excluded, and even degraded in their own country. The othering process is reflected in the first paragraph of the short story, “The farm children playtogether… beginning to call their old playmates missus and baasie - little master.” Nadine Gordimer explores themes and motives that show how the non-white people were oppressed during the Apartheid system.The students would find out the meaning behind the story throughout the events and the characters under the circumstances of colonial domination. The complexity of the racial tension in the same landis clearly represented in this short story. Privileges of a better standard of education, restrictions to certain kinds of jobs, prohibition of social contact between whites and others races, andallowance of only whites in government are revealed. The writer develops the plot showing the way the Apartheid system affected the behavior of Thebedy, Paulus, Paulus’ parents, Njabulo, and even thepress in that situation.
On the other hand, Marriage is a private affair by Chinua Achebe is a representative written piece of hybridity in Postcolonial literature or so-called Afro-Europeanliterature.
