Angel of Independence
The first stone of this recognized monument was placed on 2 January 1902 by Porfirio Díaz. The direction of the project was carried out by the architect Antonio Rivas Market,also author of the Teatro Juarez of the city of Guanajuato.
This monument was inspired by a project to pay homage to the heroes of the independence that was to build a stone plinth with a Corinthiancolumn crowned by an angel in the Plaza of the Constitution during the government of Antonio López de Santa Anna.
This project did not materialize, and already by the end of the nineteenth century,the architect Antonio Rivas Market, retook inspired in addition in some famous columns of the world as the Trajan in Rome, the Place Vendome in Paris and Alejandro in St. Petersburg. All those columnswere erected to commemorate the victory of an ideal in their respective countries.
Thus, this architect designed a circular socket on which would be a cubic base in whose vertices, rest the sedentesstatues representing Peace, Law, Justice and the War executed by Enrique Alciati. In the interior of this base lie the remains of some of the most egregious leaders of the Mexican independence asMiguel Hidalgo, Vicente Guerrero and Ignacio Allende among others. This database also contains the sculptures of these insurgents, as well as a successful sculpture of a lion guided by a child thatrepresents the domain of truth and intelligence on the force. On this basis was erected a corinthian column of 35 meters in height, carved in quarry of Chiluca; it is crowned by the famous winged Victory,symbol of the triumph among the ancient Greeks
This monument was inaugurated on 16 September 1910 as culminating event of the celebrations of the centennial of the independence, which were attended byleading diplomats, ambassadors, public employees and the people in general to enjoy the fireworks, parades and concerts that were made in the Paseo de la Reforma on that occasion.
