APA DOCUMENTATION
The research documentation style developed by the Modern Language Association (MLA) works well for literary papers. However, for papers in social science studies, the documentationstyle of the American Psychological Association (APA) is often used. This chapter explains basic APA style and gives examples of the typical kinds of sources you may need to document.
APA PAPERFORMAT
This overview gives formatting guidelines for a student research paper, not for a journal article.
Title Page- on the first page , include your paper’s title, your name, and you teacher’s name onthree separate lines. Double-space and center the lines beginning approximately one-third of the way down from the top of the page.
Abstract- on the second page, include an abstract---a 100 to120---word paragraph summarizing your paper. Place the title Abstract approximately one inch from the top of the page and center it.
Body- format the body of your paper as follows:
Margins: leave a1-inch margin on all four sides of each page. A justified right margin and end-of-line hyphens are acceptable.
Line spacing: Double-space your entire paper for tables, titles, captions, etc., for the sakeor readability.
Headings: If you need only one or two levels of headings, the first is centered, using upper- and lowercase text. The second is flush left, in upper-and lowercase text. The second isflush text, and italicized or underlined.
Page numbers: place your short title either above or five spaces to the left of the page number, at the upper right margin of all pages, beginning with thetitle page.
Citations: within your paper, give credit for other’s ideas by including the author and year in a citation. For quotations, add the page number to the citation. If a quotation runs 40words or more, type it in block style, face spaces in from the left margin, with all lines flush left along the new margin. If it is more than one paragraph.
