Abstract
Dissolution characteristics of copper in hydrochloric acid medium and the effect of 4-amino 1,2,4-triazole (ATA) on the corrosion process have been studied using conventional electrochemical techniques and rotating ring-disc electrodes (RRDEs). Corrosion potential (Ecorr) and corrosion current density (Icorr) were obtained by Tafel extrapolation methods.Charge transfer resistance (Rct) and double-layer capacitance (Cdl) were obtained from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). ATA was shown to be an effective inhibitor for the copper-corrosion inhibition in acid medium. The corrosion rate was retarded in presence of inhibitors mainly because of the adsorption of the inhibitor on the electrode surface. Adsorption of the inhibitor onthe metal surface was found to follow the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Standard free energy change of the adsorption process (ΔGad0) was calculated to be −54.3 kJ mol−1; such a large negative value of ΔGad0 suggests the prescence of a chemisorption process.

Resumen
Características de disolución del cobre en medio ácido clorhídrico y el efecto de 4-amino 1,2,4-triazol (ATA) en el proceso de corrosión se han estudiado utilizando las técnicas convencionales de electroquímica y disco giratorio, anillo de electrodos (RRDEs). Potencial de corrosión (Ecorr) y densidad de corriente de corrosión (icorr) se obtuvieron pormétodos de extrapolación Tafel. La resistencia de transferencia de carga (ECA) y la capacidad de doble capa (CDL) se obtuvieron de la espectroscopía de impedancia electroquímica (EIS). ATA ha demostrado ser un eficaz inhibidor de la inhibición de la corrosión del cobre en medio ácido. La velocidad de corrosión se retrasó en presencia de inhibidores, principalmente debido a la adsorción del inhibidoren la superficie del electrodo. La adsorción del inhibidor en la superficie del metal se ha encontrado para seguir la isoterma de adsorción de Langmuir. Variación de energía libre del proceso de adsorción (ΔGad0) se calculó en -54.3 kJ mol-1, un valor negativo de ΔGad0 sugiere la pre-sencia de un proceso de quimisorción.

The American company believed to be responsible for the corroded pipelines that spilled as much as 28,000 barrels of oil in Northern Alberta has dealt with the same issue in the United State, according to a published report.
The Calgary Herald reports Plains All American Pipeline is very familiar to the Environmental Protection Agency. In August 2010,the federal agency and the company settled a lawsuit over 10 oil leaks from 2004 to 2007. The majority of the leaks were attributed to corroded pipelines.
