Nowadays, despite globalization, understanding the otherness within novels fromdifferent cultures and social backgrounds is hard to achieve. Creating awareness of how the world really is and encouraging people to take actions in order to change for better, is the main goal, to myopinion, of Arundathi Roy in her book: The God of Small Things. Roy, through her non-sequential narrative and allusions to other novels, condemns the British colonization of her country as well as theconventional and traditional morals of her society.
Roy makes use of flashback and foreshadow in order to alter the chronological sequence of the novel and by that, tries to give the reader a generaland objetive perspective of the themes. The flashbacks of the story swing mainly between the childhood of the twins, which includes their mother personal life, and their present and lonely life. Forinstance, in chapter 7, Rahel is reading through a notebook from Estha's childhood, where he wrote that his surname was Un-known “while Ammu, his mother, decided between her husband's name and father's”(Roy, p. 73). This quote depicts the traces of a divorce in kids life and how even after 25 years, those events still mark their personalities. Likewise, when describing Sophie's Mol funeral, shestates: “Though Ammu, Estha and Rahel were allowed to attend the funeral, they were made to stand separately, not with the rest of the family. Nobody would look at them. ” (Roy, p. 3). This passagetells the reader how hindu society judges and punishes people who don't follow the traditional rules of culture, and how kids, even when they didn't commit something wrong, as they belong to their mother,they have to pay the consequences. Through flashbacks, Arundhati shows the world how unfair, racist, and unbearable Hindu system turns out.
