Jonathan Edwards
Born: October 5, 1703
Princeton, N.J.
Died: March 22,1758
He was the son of Timothy Edwards, a minister at East Windsor, Connecticut. His mother, Esther Stoddard, daughter of the Rev. Solomon Stoddard, of Northampton, Massachusetts, seems to have been a woman of unusual mental gifts and independence of character.
He entered Yale College in 1716, at just under the age of thirteen. He was interested in natural history and, at the age of seventeen, wrote a remarkable essay on the habits of the "flying spider." Even before his graduation in September 1720. Even though he would go on to study theology for two years after his graduation in New Haven, Edwards continued to be interested in science. However, while many European scientists and American clergymen found the implications of science pushing them towards deism, Edwards went the other way;he saw the natural world as evidence of God's masterful design.
On February 15, 1727, Edwards was ordained minister at Northampton and assistant to his grandfather, Solomon Stoddard. In the same year, he married Sarah Pierpont.
In 1734 - 1735 there occurred in his parish a "great awakening” of religious feeling; in 1740--1741 occurred another, which extended through a large part of New England. At this time he became associated with George Whitefield. He did not favor the extravagances attending the new measures of the revivalists. He did promote the doctrinal purity, at the same time quickening the zeal, of the churches. Edwards was ejected in 1750 from the pastorate which be had adorned for more than twenty-three years.
In Aug., 1751, he was installed pastor of the smallCongregational church in Stockbridge, Mass., and missionary of the Housatonic Indians at that place whom he served with fidelity. On Sept. 26, 1757, he was elected president of the college at Princeton, N. J. but finally yielded to the advice of others, and was dismissed from his Stockbridge pastorate Jan. 4, 1758. One week after his inauguration he was inoculated for the smallpox. After the ordinary...
