The novels Brave New World and 1984 describe two different kinds of communities; one that is liberal and one that is noticeably conservative. Both communitieshave very interesting strategies and techniques that the government uses to control the society, which are used to remove the people's privacy and thoughts and to make the people believe in thegovernment.
First of all, these two novels have one strategy that is considered the greatest and the most useful. In Brave New World, the more liberal community, sex is used as a distraction so that thepeople do not have thoughts about rebelling against the government. Also, sex would be very common, and there would be no relationships amongst the society, so there would be plenty of work done byeveryone and nothing to distract them from work. This is demonstrated when Lenina, one of the main characters from this book, is with her friend, who says “Four months of Henry Foster, without havinganother man- why he'd be furious if he knew...” (Huxley 41). It was not common at all to have a relationship with someone for so long. There were never relationships in general, since everyone wouldhave sex with each other every night. On the contrary, the government in 1984 has surveillance cameras throughout the entire community to secure that everyone is doing what they are supposed to do. Thiscommunity had rules that people had to obey, otherwise the government would know and they would be punished. The author writes that “Winston was able to remain outside the range of the telescreen, sofar as sight went” (Orwell 6), demonstrating that the main character had the ability to not be seeing the entire time,meaning he had more privacy than others did to do whatever he wanted. It was hisspace of freedom.
