Benito Juarez was born in Oaxaca in 1806. His parents were natives Marcelino Juarez andBrigida Garcia. They died when Benito was 3 years old. Then it was raised by his grandparents and worked as a shepherd until age 12. It was when he left for the city of Oaxaca. Here he entered theSeminary of Santa Cruz in Oaxaca, but soon the Institute of Arts and Sciences to study law. When he graduated 1834, worked defending indigenous causes. In parallel, he entered politics and held importantpublic office in Oaxaca.
In 1847, he was elected and moved to Mexico City where he strengthened his relations with the Liberals. In 1853, he was expelled by President Lopez de Santa Anna, but returnedin 1855 thanks to President John N. Alvarez who appointed him Minister of Justice and Education. In this position cut the privileges of the clergy and the army.
In 1858, he became President ofMexico and the following year enacted the "Law of Nationalization of church property." Conservative opponents he defeated in 1860 with U.S. assistance. In 1862, the French invaded Mexico and imposed asEmperor Maximilian of Hapsburg. Benito Juarez led the resistance. His troops defeated the usurper and were shot in 1867. The same year he was reelected as President of the Republic.
In this newstage Benito Juarez implemented free education and built roads across the country. In 1871 he ran again for president and was the winner. Then Porfirio Diaz revolted, accusing him of electoral fraud, butwas defeated in 1872. But Benito Juarez, 66, already suffering from heart and respiratory problems. On the night of July 18, 1872 angina killed him. The Mexican people buried him with honors and...
