Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that uses biology, chemistry and processes, with heavy use in agriculture, pharmacy, food science, forestry and medicine. Probably the first to use thisterm was the Hungarian engineer Karl Ereky in 1919.

An internationally accepted definition of biotechnology is:

Biotechnology refers to any technological application that uses biological systems,living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use.

The applications of biotechnology are many and are generally classified as:

* Redbiotechnology: applies to the use of biotechnology in medical processes. Some examples are the designing of organisms to produce antibiotics.

* White biotechnology: known as industrial biotechnology,is that applied to industrial processes. An example of this is the design of microorganisms to produce a chemical or the use of enzymes as industrial catalysts.

* Green biotechnology isbiotechnology applied to agricultural processes. An example is the design of transgenic plants able to grow in unfavorable environmental conditions or plants resistant to pests and diseases.

* BlueBiotechnology: marine biotechnology also called, is a term used to describe applications of biotechnology in marine and aquatic environments.

Advantage

Key benefits of biotechnology are:

*Superior Performance.
The crop yield is increased, giving more food by fewer resources.
* Reduction of pesticides.
Reduce the use of pesticides associated with it that often cause great environmentaldamage and health.
* Improved nutrition.
You can get to introduce vitamins and protein in food and reduce allergens and natural toxins.
