Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock Holmes, one of the most famous characters in fiction , wasthe creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a surgeon who began writing to supplement the income from his medical practice. Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland , and attended schools in Scotland andGermany before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh . He was ship surgeon on voyages to the Arctic and to Africa before he married and practiced medicine in Portsmouth , England.
Doyledecided that he would try to invent a new kind of story that he hoped many would enjoy. He modeled the character of Sherlock Holmes after a medical school instructor whose deductive powers amazedeveryone.
The first Sherlock Holmes story , “ A Study in scarlet “ ( 1887) , received little attention when it was published after many rejections. A couple of years later , an American magazineeditor asked him to write another Sherlock Holmes story. That story , “ The Sing of four “ launched Doyle´s career as master writer of detective stories. The public demanded and received so manySherlock Holmes stories that Doyle became boarded with the character he had created . In “the final problem” (1893) Holmes was killed by his archenemy . Public protest was so great that Doyle had tobring Holmes back to life in the next story he wrote.
Doyle wrote 56 stories based on the character of Sherlock Holmes . He was knighted in 1902 for is history of the South African (Boer) War , and forhis work in a field hospital in South African.
