The Catcher in the Rye
1. Characterize Holden Caulfield.
Holden Caulfield is the main character and who tells his own story; he narrates the story in first person.
At the age of sixteen,Holden is confused and emotionally disturbed, he is lost and in the process to become an adult. From the begging of the story we notice that he has a lot of problems, he is expelled of four schools andis currently hospitalized. All his issues are due to the great amount of traumas he lived in the past; the death of his brother Allie and the suicide of one of his schoolmates. He is very judgmental;during the whole story he criticizes everything and everyone and he puts labels to every person he met; boring, insecure and mostly, “phony”. He is very unhappy at the moment and after he is expelledfrom Pencey Prep he falls into a breakdown, sometime´s making him think in committing suicide.
Hi believes that the world is not longer full of valuable human qualities, full of love and kindness,instead the world is now more interest in having success, in power and money. When he decides to run away is because he needs to find himself, and to find the meaning of life. But the most importantthing that he is looking for is to connect with others.
He is very self-centered, like for example when he was alone, watching from a mountain far away the school the most important game during thewhole year, he didn’t go to see it with his friends, helping the school team. He was very thoughtful about him leaving at the end of vacations.
He contradicts himself a lot, he is attracted to girlsthat he doesn’t really like (like Sally) but he really wants to be with someone he really likes a lot, just like Jane.
He also respects a lot the people that show moral values, such as Mr. Antonilibecause he was the only one that tried to help James Castle after his death, he was the only one to whom he showed his kindness. These tell us that he knows that not everybody is “phony” as he...
