1. Civil contemporary engineering
Civil contemporary engineering begins between the XIXth and XXth centuries, with the development ofmathematical models of calculation (Castigliano, Mohr, Navier,…). In Spain, it begins with Agustin de Betancourt. Agustin de Betancourt, of Canary origin, travels to Paris, where studies civilengineering in “l’École de Pont et Chausses”. To his return to Spain it founds the “Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos” of Madrid in 1802. The aim is to create anengineers' body with a high formation that could attack a great extension of the civil infrastructure in the Spain of the 19th century.

2. Branches of civil engineering
2.1. Structural engineeringStructural engineering calculates the minimal resistance of elements submitted to alive loads, dead loads and eventual loads (earthquakes, winds, snow, etc.), trying a condition of minimal service to theminor possible cost. 2.2. Geotechnical engineering Geotechnical engineering calculates the resistance between particles of the terrestrial mantle of different nature, granulometry, dampness, cohesion, andof the properties of soils in general, in order to assure the interaction of soil with the structure. In addition, it realizes the design of the foundation or support for buildings, bridges, etc....
