The Common App Fallacy

In the article “The Common App Fallacy” the writer Damon Beres argues that college applications are not as effective as they should be due to the massive andincreasing number of Common Applications that are being sent to the Universities, reducing students’ chances of getting into them.


Truth is, college applications are a crapshoot; only a few peopleis lucky to be chosen in the universities. There are a lot of students who have impressive GPA’s and extracurriculars, and despite of that they are shut out of everywhere which leaves them hopeless.Colleges nationwide, have been reporting substantial increases in applications that show a positive aspect by reflecting that there are more students interested on higher education, though, ithas become a problem because students are not getting into the schools that they want or deserve according their SAT scores. As a consequence of that, students use to send a lot of applications, whichis only making things worse by creating more competition and taking spots at universities where they are not interested.


Despite their actions, this problem can’t be seen as the students’fault; the real culprits are the College Board and the Common Application, who are encouraging this situation.


In order to counter this situation, universities must to get rid of the CommonApplication that only provides money from the applications feeds, some universities certainly don’t need the extra applicants that the Common Application brings in. The Common App has turned into asterile business that doesn’t put attention in the students’ unique and personalized application where it is shown a serious interest in the school.


In conclusion, students have a betterchance of winning a “Crazy Cash” scratch off ticket than of getting into college; to avoid this situation, the students should actually care about their applications, which might mean taking the time...
