Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the confidence and pertinence of the Schour andMassler PMA and the Löu and Sillness indices for measuring gingivitis experience. Material and methods: A descriptive and transversal epidemiological study was carried out. The evaluators were calibrated according to the conditions and criteria established for the PMA Index and Gingival Index. In order to measure the association between the observations of these indices and those of the modelevaluator, the Spearman Correlation coefficient was calculated. Results: The sensitivity to the PMA Index and Gingival Index was shown to be Gingival Index. However, the specificity for both was low. With respect to correlation with the model evaluator, the PMA Index did not show any association. This was not the case with the Gingival Index which showed a greater confidence level for measuring themagnitude of the gingival inflammation. Conclusions: Both the PMA Index and the Gingival Index can be used when the purpose of the study is only to measure prevalence or incidence. The Gingival Index has a higher confidence level than the PMA Index for measuring the severity of the inflammation.
