I. Available Water
A. The abundance or scarcity of water is the major factor shaping the west natural vegetation economic activity and populationdensity.
B. Most of the west has an arid or semi arid climate.
C. Some areas like San Diego and California get 23 centimeters of rain that is very little rain.D. Most of the Hawaii has a wet tropical climate and dense tropical rain forest vegetation.
E. Tundra- A dry, treeless plain that sprouts gasses and mosses only insummer, when the top layer of soil thaws.
II. Natural Resources and the Economy
A. When gold and silver deposits were discovered in the mid 1800s, fortune –seekingprospectors and settlers swarmed into the area.
B. The population of the West grew rapidly.
C. Deeper still within their rugged surface, western lands also containvaluable deposits of natural gas and oil.
D. The discovery of a major oil field near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in the 1960s led to the transformation of the state’s economy.E. The Natural resources of the west also support two other important economic activities, which are: Forestry and commercial fishing.
III. The Growth of WesternCities.
A. In the 1880s the railroads lowered their fare between the Midwest and Los Angeles to only one dollar.
B. According the Southwest corner of the continentalUnited States is the nation’s second large city, Los Angeles, California.
C. By the 1920s, the city was attracting new residents with development of the military andcivil aircraft industry and the motion picture industry.
D. Aqueducts- Large pipes that carry water via distances.
IV. Conquering Western Distances
