Día de muertos & Halloween
In Mexico, once a year, death is celebrated. “Each autumn, the living invite their dead to join them in a festival of communion-to return home again and, for a fewhours, to sit by the hearth and warm their cold bones before returning to the land of the dead” (Rosoff, Rosalind)
Dead always means something different. Each culture learns to deal with the loss of lifein order to survive. In many of these, the deceased are thought to take a long journey into place where they obtain a hallowed status.
Through years of poverty, violence and oppression, dead hasbeen ever present “the Aztecs did not afraid Mictlantecuhtli, their god of death; rather, they feared the uncertainty of life”. That god did not punish the dead for the sins of their lives on earth.Instead he released man from his burdens, and the dead went to a heaven determined not by how they lived, but by how the died.
With the time, a new set of ideas came from the exterior to coexist withexisting beliefs. Saints joined the gods, and All Souls and All Saints merged with the rites to Mictlantecuhtli (harvest god).
Nowadays, All Saints’ Day, November 1, was established as the time to prayfor the souls of dead children, All Souls’ Day November 2, became the day to remember the adults and the night of October 31 became All Hallow’s Eve.
In Mexico, The Days of the Death are celebratedwith a mixture of reverence for the departed to make them happy upon their return and deceives to defy the fear of death itself. From region to region, there are basic rituals: receiving the spirits ofthe dead at home, offering them food and drink and being with them beside their graves, bells ring all the afternoon as the adults arrive.
The smell of candles and copal incense fill the home. Bythe evening on November 2, the party is over and the ghosts return to the world of the dead.
