Death In Italian Culture During Renaissance

| Death is the process by which someone stops living. It’s something natural that happens to all living things, and humans are not the exception. Death has been really important for human societies, because since the beginning humans have been trying to explain what happens after it. Of course, there are many different explanations but the important thing about death is how it affects the cultureand traditions in a society. Death is the reason and the conclusion of our existence in a certain way, and it helps us understand life. Death is the end of our lives, human societies just could not accept this, and since long time ago they have been wondering and researching what happens after death. By answering this kind of questions the perception about life for humans has changed. Death isthe final stage of growth. All that you are and all that you have been is culminated in your death. Therefore, death is one of the most important stages in life. Most societies and religions believe in life after death, purgatory, hell, heaven, reincarnation, anyway it always depends on how good our life was here on Earth.Death has always been a really important factor for the religious beliefs ona society. As it is the way by which you access or start your new “journey” on a different and unknown place. The religious beliefs of a society are very important because there are many different traditions in order to prepare people for death and life after death. That is why in order to understand death we must know the beliefs of that culture.During history, Italy has been one of the mostimportant and influential countries in the world. Italy, officially the Italian Republic, is located in the southern part of Europe. Italy has two independent states called “Vatican City” and “San Marino”. The language spoken is Italian. Rome, capital of Italy, is a city with a lot of political and religious power. It has been an essential part for western civilizations. Italy is a place with a hugeamount of historical events. One clear example is the period of the plague that occurred during the mid-fourteenth century. This period of the Middle Age was marked because of the terrible disease called the “Black Death”; it started in 1328 and lasted until 1351, although there were some other outbreaks for the next sixty years. In 1348 the plague was expanded in the great city of Florence,first arisen in the east some years before, causing the death of countless human beings, unfortunately, it swept over the west, it is estimated that more than 100,000 human beings lost their lives within Florence.The plague was called the Black Death because of the symptoms; it was caused and spread by fleas that were carried by small rodents. The plague caused a blackening of the skin with red buboesthat turned in dark purple or black. It was believed to be originated in the Gobi Desert and held a massive mortality rate. |

The famous description of the Black Death appeared first by the Florentine humanist Giovanni Boccaccio, who described the course of this fatal disease and also wrote about the speed with which the dead were buried. Boccaccio’s emphasized not only in the horrors ofthe disease but also the inability of anyone, regardless of status or economical condition, to escape from it. Every one of us had heard about stories of the plague, reflecting Christian beliefs in the afterlife and the desire to honor and memorialize the dead.Christianism is the most important religion in Italy, and of course, the death traditions of a country depend on the religious beliefs.Italy has been an important Christian country since long time ago. Rome held the control of Jerusalem in the times of Jesus Christ, and his teachings and life quickly spread over the Roman Empire. Until the year 313 the Edict of Milan, published by Constantine “the Great”, the Christian Religion kept growing until it became the most important religion in Italy, when Theodosius “the Great” declared...
