Demography

Demography is the study of human populations, such as size, growth, density, distribution, and vital statistics. This is the study of human populations, particularly with respect tobirths, marriages, deaths, employment, migration, health, etc. Demographic analysis can be applied to whole societies or to groups defined by criteria such as education, nationality, religion andethnicity.

Ibn Khaldun is regarded as the “father of demography” for his economic analysis of social organization which produced the first scientific and theoretical work on population, development, andgroup dynamics.

Perhaps the most common and popular method of direct collection of demographic data is thecensus. It is commonly performed by a government agency to enumerate every person in a country. The interval between 2 census surveys depends on the government conducting. In many countries censusestypically occur only ever 10 years or so, and thus are not usually the best source of data on births and deaths. They typically collect information about families or households, individualcharacteristics as age, sex, marital status, education, occupation, geographical location, migration, language, religion, nationality, citizenship.

The indirect method of demographic data collection mayinvolve only certain people in trying to get data for the entire population. For instance, one of the indirect demographic data methods is the sister method. In this method, researchers only ask all thewomen on the number of their sisters who have died or have had children who have died at what age they died. Other indirect methods include asking people about siblings, parents, and children.
