At aWhite House press conference, he said: 'An initial examination of those packages has determined that they do apparently contain explosive material.' The disclosure triggered a worldwide alert amid fears that al Qaeda was attempting to carry out fresh terror attacks. Mr Obama said the events 'underscore the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism'. He said the country 'is taking thisthreat very seriously', and that 'we will continue to pursue additional protective measures'. Mr Obama also praised the 'extraordinary skill and resolve' of federal investigators. The packages originated in Yemen, and Mr Obama said: 'Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula continues to plan attacks against our homeland, our citizens, and our friends and allies. 'Going forward, we will continue tostrengthen our cooperation with the Yemeni government ... to destroy this al Qaeda affiliate.' The events have unfolded four days before U.S. elections - in which discussion of terrorism has played almost no role. The transatlantic terror alert sparked tense scenes in the U.S., as a passenger aircraft flying from Yemen was diverted by two armed fighter jets. Mr Obama said he was alerted last night byintelligence from an ally abroad.

The U.S. government is investigating whether the packages, which were reportedly addressed to the same location, were a possible dry run for a mail bomb plot or anactual bombing attempt. The FBI said the packages were addressed to religious institutions in Chicago. UPS flights were grounded and cargo planes were being swept after the suspect package was found at East Midlands airport. FedEx in Dubai say police confiscated a suspicious package on a plane.
