Yucatán is one of the thirty-one states that, along with the Federal District, comprise the thirty-two states inMexico. The state is located in the southeast of Mexico and north of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is bounded on the north by the Gulf of Mexico, southeast of the state of Quintana Roo and southwest bythe state of Campeche.

GOVERNMENT

The Constitution establishes the Yucatan division of powers in the Executive, Legislative andJudicial. Executive power is exercised by the governor of the state of Yucatan, and the Legislature by the Congress of Yucatán which is a unicameral legislature composed of 25 deputies. Both thegovernor and deputies are elected by universal suffrage and secret ballot. The judicial power of the State is exercised by the High Court of the State.

According to the constitution, the executive powerof the Mexican entity is vested in a single individual, named Governor of the Free and Sovereign State of Yucatan, and is elected for a period of six years (previously 4) beginning 1 October of theyear of the election. Currently, the gubernatorial period begins on 1 October of the year of the election and ends on July 31 after six years elapsed.
