England (Listeni /ˈɪŋɡlənd/) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.[6][7][8] It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west; theIrish Sea is to the north west, the Celtic Sea to the south west and the North Sea to the east, with the English Channel to the south separating it from continental Europe. Most of England comprises thecentral and southern part of the island of Great Britain in the North Atlantic. The country also includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight.

It is an Indo-European language in the Anglo-Frisian branch of the Germanicfamily.[180] After the Norman conquest, the Old English language was displaced and confined to the lower social classes as Norman French and Latin were used by the aristocracy.

The red cross appeared as an emblem of England during the Middle Ages and the Crusades and is one of the earliest known emblems representingEngland. It also represents the official arms of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, and it achieved status as the national flag of England during the sixteenth century.[1]
Saint George became thepatron saint of England in the thirteenth century, and the legend of Saint George slaying a dragon dates from the twelfth century.
