Jonathan Ponce Descriptive Essay English Composition II 7 February 2011 Walls in El Morro I love to go to El Morro, a fort in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There I climb the wall on the right hand side of it right by one of the sentry boxes and sit there for hours and enjoy the view in this extraordinary site. The best thing isthat I can come here any time of the day and always feel the fresh breeze coming from the ocean, and if I’m lucky see the sun rising or going down on the ocean. I can sit there for hours by myself or with a friend, thinking or talking and enjoying the view. El Morro is a historical fort that is one of the most places visited by tourists as well as locals in the island of Puerto Rico. The fort itself was built by the Spanish hundreds of years ago when they took over the island. The fort was built with a triangle shape right at the sea shore. Its walls were built very thick to protect the fort from damage from battles. The walls go all around the sea shore near the fort. The fort has several sentry boxes all around it. In the past the sentry boxes were used for lookouts,so that they could spot in sight the enemy that could come without notice. The sentry boxes are strategically placed around the walls; to get to them you have to go through a narrow pathway. The insides shape is round and fits about two people; it has three to four horizontal rectangular openings so that the lookouts could look through them. From the inside you can see the ocean and feel thebreeze coming through the openings. The outside is around ten feet high with a round shape; the top and bottom part of it are shaped like a bell. It also has a five and a half feet opening to the inside of the sentry box. Both the inside and the outside are worn out and rusty because of all the battles the fort went through and all the heat and rain it’s gotten over decades. The spot where I liketo sit has a beautiful and historical view. The view is amazing; I can see the beautiful blue and clean ocean that can look like a big plate that the island of Puerto Rico is set in. There is vegetation all around the fort, so when I look at it from the distance I see the big rusty fort and all the green around it. Even the outer part of the fort that is toward the ocean has vegetation. When Ilook towards the ocean sitting in my spot I can see and hear the waves crushing on the shore. The waves create white foam that from the distance look like small clouds floating in the water. When I look behind me I see a road that stretches from the Old San Juan all the way to the fort with two plains of grass on each side of the road. This road has been there for many years; about five yearsago it was renovated from a dirt road to a concrete road. When I look to my right, I can see in a lower level about sixty feet down a cemetery where many of Puerto Rico’s legends have been buried. In the middle of the cemetery there is a chapel that looks well constructed compared to most of the graves that are broken down and rusty and haven’t been restored over the many years they’ve been thereresisting heat and rain. If I turn to my right I’m looking straight at one of the walls from the right side of the fort. This thick wall is about twenty feet high. I have come here many times with my family to fly kites; since its right by the sea shore, the wind is extraordinary coming with great power blowing the kites as high as their lines goes. Local people and many tourists come hereto do the same as my family; others have picnics in the grass since it has such an amazing breeze and view. Many tourists from all over the world come here to see the fort and many have the experience of going inside and taking tours of the fort and its history. A big number of the tourist that come to see the fort, come in cruises that arrive at a walking distance, and about three to five...
