Essay Topic: “I started early – took my dog”.

The Poem which written by Emily Dickinson seems to be part of her life where Emily started to discover her sexuality with all the emotions that itinvolves but also it makes me think about a sensation of death, a suicide or an experience near the death.

The first stanza of the poem starts by saying that “she started early” it means that at ayoung age , she started her sexual life and the presence of a dog is accompayying her but not protecting her during a walk to the beach. Then, She refers to “The Marmaids” it is also another sensualthought which means a femine women image, perhaps women with more sexual experiences than her and “the basement” is commonly located in the bottom of houses and it is a secret or hidden place wherethe mayority of the sexual acts occurs.

In the second stanza she refers to presence of “Frigates” it means that they are the ones who want to keep her innocently “like a mouse”, but also it showsthat she feels like a mouse because she does not have as much experience as the other women around her ( The marmaids).

In the third stanza, she starts to explore her sexuality more specificallyand here it is showed the image of the sea which personifies a male sexual image and this man covers most of her body causing several feelings and emotions, it seems as if she is being raped orconsumed  by this man.

When she says “Went past my simple Shoe, And past my Apron, and my Belt and past my Bodice, too” it describes the way the man is acting with extremely erotism but also she isbeing stripped aggresively. In other point of view it can be interpreted as the feelings and desires which are present in the sexual act.

In the fifth stanza and also during all the poem she refersto the sea as “HE” it shows that even though she is with him, she is still afraid of him and also the fear present in the act has not vanished.
