eneUn catalizador propiamente dicho es una sustancia que está presente en una reacción química en contacto físico con los reactivos, y acelera, induce o propicia dicha reacción sin actuar en la misma.

Los técnicos en automotores comenzamos a utilizar la tecnología de los catalizadores para disminuir la polución producida por automotores.

En nuestrocaso, utilizamos catalizadores sólidos metálicos para catalizar reacciones de los gases tóxicos antes de que salgan por el caño de escape del automotor. Los gases que debemos eliminar principalmente son el monóxido de carbono (CO), el óxido de nitrógeno (N2O3) y los hidrocarburos degradados producto de la combustión incompleta o ineficiente. Otras sustancias tóxicas que en menor proporción estánpresentes en los gases son el benzol, los aldehidos y partículas.

El convertidor catalítico es un dispositivo instalado en la salida del múltiple de escape. Dentro de una carcaza de acero inoxidable se alojan miles de celdas catalíticas por donde circulan los gases de escape. Estas celdas son sumamente delgadas y dispuestas de tal forma que conforman una superficie de contacto con el gasequivalente a tres canchas de fútbol. Las celdas conforman una colmena cerámica recubierta por una capa amortiguadora que la protege de los golpes.
La formulación incluye una serie de sustancias activas como óxido de aluminio, metales nobles (que hacen las veces de catalizadores sólidos): Platino, Rodio, Paladio y promotores y retardadores específicos que regulan la acción catalítica de los mismos.Fuente(s):
