TIME MACHINE
ACT I " PRESENT"
Scene 1 "Introduction"
(Helga, a character representing fate, sings the song)
The world is changing colour. The earth is grey, oceans are brown, the sky is black. The end is coming.
(The set is changed to the hallway of a University where the door to the "Physics Research Center" is.)
Scene 2 "Inside the Physics Research Center" (PRC)"
(Weird noises come outof the PRC. Inside of it the Professor is working on something. The door opens automatically and he comes out, tired and dialing his cell phone.)
CELL PHONE: You have reached Bertha, please leave your message after the beep. (beep)
PROFESSOR: Bertha!It´s me I´m having some problems with the (He looks around, checking that no one hears, and then he whispers "The Time Machine" but it can´t beheard) I need you here, now!
(The Professor shouts in frustration. He dials another number in his cell phone.)
PROFESSOR: Mike! (Mike talks) Yes, it´s me (Mike talks) It is not working (Mike talks) The Energy System I need help (Mike talks and he hangs up, the Professor is really mad at him, he puts away the telephone) Bertha! Where are you?
TIME MACHINE: (off) Time Travel Formula Missing. TimeTravel Formula Missing. Time Travel Formula Missing. Time Travel Formula Missing.
(The professor dials again Bertha´s number.)
CELL PHONE: You have reached Bertha please leave your...
(The professor hangs up very mad at Bertha. The professor passes his magnetic card through the door´s reader, it fails several times because he passes it too fast. He passes it slowly enough and the door is opened, hecomes back inside.)
Scene 3 "Routine"
(Laurie and Nick enter, beginning a new day at the University.)
(Laurie and Nick leave.)
Scene 4: "The Time is Now"
(Bertha enters, and puts her headphones on)
RADIO MC: This is "Action Radio", it´s 8 o´clock. Here are the greatest new hits in this beautiful morning! We have a message!
BERTHA: (off) Hello! This is Bertha calling from the university. Iwant to listen to the song: "The Time is Now", thank you!
RADIO MC: For you Bertha, "The Time is Now". Have a nice day!
(Bertha dances to the song. She is loving it.)
(The Professor gets out of the PRC and sees Bertha. He takes her headphones out, scolds her and gives her instructions. She takes a photograph to him and he leaves. She puts her headphones on again.) (Bertha works on her laptop,while listening to the song. She prints a poster.)(Laurie and Nick enter, both concentrated in their own affairs and not seeing each other or Bertha.) (Bertha grabs the poster and hangs it on the wall. She unplugs the headphones so the music can be heard by everyone and connects a little microphone to her laptop. She talks over the last part of the song.)
PROFESSOR: Tired of your routine? This isyour opportunity to make a change. Come on! Don´t be shy... The Time Is NOW!
(Laurie and Nick listen to this and are curious about the proposal. They both go to the poster and grab it at the same time.)
Scene 5 "They Meet"
LAURIE: Hey!
NICK: What?
LAURIE: Give me that.
NICK: What? My poster?
LAURIE: I took it first!
NICK: Well... it is in my hand.
LAURIE: It is in my hand. Let me readit.
NICK: After I read it.
LAURIE: I can´t believe this.
(They both pull the poster, that it breaks in two pieces)
NICK: You broke it!
LAURIE: You broke it. Can´t you be a gentleman?
NICK: I am a gentleman, but only when I see a lady.
(They look at each other with anger and take some steps apart from each other)
NICK: (reading his part of the poster) Assistant
LAURIE: (reading his part ofthe poster) looking
NICK: amazing project...
LAURIE: work...
NICK: Center...
LAURIE: Physics Research...
NICK: One...
LAURIE: Only...
(Laurie and Nick are confused. They look at each other, knowing that they need the information the other has to read the poster properly.)
NICK: Is now...
LAURIE: The time...
LAURIE & NICK: The Time is now!
LAURIE: I am looking for
NICK: An assistant...
