Research Paper On Mendelevium
Mendelevium is an element on the periodic table of elements which is found on the bottom right side. It is a radioactive metal. Its symbol Is Md, Itsatomic number is 101 (also its atomic mass). It was discovered by a team of scientist at the University of California, Berkeley in 1955, G.T Seaborg, S.G. Tompson,A. Ghiorso, K. Street Jr . Named inhonor of Dmitri Mendeleev, who devised a periodic table of elements. Mendelevium is the ninth transuranium element of the actinide series (which means a radioactive rare earth element). Someexperiments indicated that Mendelevium is a stable dispositive(II) oxidation state in addition to the tripositive (III) oxidation state, as is characteristic of the actinide elements. When in room temperatureit is a solid. It has been used to determine some of the chemical properties of mendelevium in aqueous solution. Around Fourteen isotopes have been recognized. We know very little about this elementbecause it’s very rare. For instance, it is virtually impossible to determine the appearance of this element, and therefore it is assumed that it is either silver of white in color. What is interestingabout mendelevium is that is not a naturally occurring element (Man-Made) and the process of synthesizing it is quite expensive and time-consuming. Only trace amounts of this element has beenproduced as of now, this explain why we have such little information about this chemical element. Although we know it’s stable in oxidation the research is still going on. Mendelevium has no known biologicalrole. One thing you should about this element is that is known for its radioactivity owing to which it is potentially harmful for human health, but when produced artificially reduces the chances ofpeople coming in direct contact with it. It’s interesting that even though the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) did give a positive nod for the name, the ‘Mv’ symbol proposed...
