Essay: “The Banking Concept of Education” (Feedback)
In the “Banking concept of Education” by Paulo Freire is anessay that describes two different systems of education: The “banking” concept method and the problem
posing. In the banking method, education becomes an act of depositing, in which the students arethe depositories, and the teacher is the depositor. Nowadays, most teachers use this method without realizing it. In the problem-posing method, it consists in acts of cognition, not transferals ofinformation. This is what Freire believes to be a successful education method. There are many conflicting views between these two methods starting with the student-teacher relationship in each method.One major conflicting view is that in the banking education, Freire explains the relationship between the teacher and the student. It explains that the teacher teaches, and the students listen andare taught this minimizes students creative power and doesn’t give them a chance to think and discuss the material with the teacher. An example of this is the teacher talking, and students get boredand fall asleep or get easily distracted. Opposed to that method, in the problem-posing education, they can
build a dialogue about the material and in that way the teacher is no longer the one whoteaches but one who is himself taught in dialogue with the students.This way students feel more comfortable in discussing material and are not afraid if the teacher judges him or her or penalizes him orher, and they all learn from each other.
