Essay "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck
"Of mice and men" is a novel written by a famous American author called John Steinbeck. It was published in the 1930's during the depression and narratesthe unhappy story of two ranch workers who travel together and have each other's back until a sequence of unfortunate events break up this friendship and it ends in tragedy. The story shows theinequality of rights. Rights applied mainly for men, not so much for women and African American people. It is a tragic story in many aspects, not only for the discrimination, but also for the events thatoccur as the story goes on. Steinbeck also puts out there the loneliness that being ranch worker brings and the solution that black men had to go through just because of the color of their skin.

Ourmain characters are George Millon, a cynical serious guy, and Lennie Small, an innocent man with mental disabilities. They have been together for a very long time and they state that they are not justtwo common ranch workers "Guys like us, that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong no place" (pg 7). But they are different "We got a future. Wegot somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don't have to sit-in no bar room blowing in our jack jus' because we got no place else to go" (Pg7). So they claim that they have each other andthey are not at all alone in the world. And even though Lennie is an extra burden to George he is his only company so he sticks with him.

There are some other characters in the story who Steinbeckpresents to us as very lonely. Candy an old man without a hand is a good example of this. "(...) He is right arm, and out the sleeve came around stick-like wrist, but not a hand" (Pg8). He is lonelybecause he has no one else in the entire world that would care if he died or not.
