Assignment: essay on Alternative and traditional assessment.
“What I have learned about alternative and traditional assessment”
“Life is not amultiple choice test, it´s an open-book essay exam” –Alan Blinder. Over this week I have realized that there are different ways to assess students rather than only testing them by formal standardizedtasks. In this essay I will point out the importance to use not only traditional tests but the use of alternative assessments activities that also help students in their process of second languageacquisition. In addition, I will mention some of the alternative assessments that are proposed in the articles “Assessment of a distance: traditional vs. alternative assessment” by Semire Dikli and “Isthere life beyond language testing? An introduction to alternative language assessment” written by Dina Tsagari.
To begin with, it is important to clarify some terms and ideas about alternativeassessment and traditional testing. Let us start with alternative assessment. In the process of acquiring a second language, it is valuable to assess what students know and what they are able to do. Someof the advantages that alternative assessment offers are that they simulate real- life context, teachers look the production instead of scores, students have the chance to fail, but as the same time,they have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities at a different time and or situation. In addition, by using alternative assessment, teachers help students to develop thinking skills that areuseful to simulate problems based on their daily life context. Some alternative assessment activities are: conferences, debates, demonstrations, diaries/journals, dramatizations, projects, portfolios,exhibitions and so forth. To conclude with, alternative assessment gives the opportunity to students to generate a response by doing what they have learned.
