Article Review on “Backlash grows over pat-downs, scanners”
The online article titled “Backlash grows over pat-downs, scanners” by Charisse Jones and Thomas Frank, discusses about newregulation of Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The TSA has imposed a safety control in which scanners can see throughout the people’s clothes. Today technology became part of our life and nowairlines are using scanners to control the passengers. Since September 11, 2001 the controls in airports increase extremely because some individuals try to transport explosives or drug in theirunderwear, an example for that is” Richard Reid who tried to bring down a jet flying from Paris to Miami by lighting an explosive in his shoes (Jones and Frank).” The propose of using these scanners isproviding graphic images of passengers that can reveal weapons hidden underneath clothes to prevent terrorism. But this is not the only problem; some passengers are turning lastingly against airports’security and only 81% of Americans agree with the body scanners (Jones and Frank). John Pistole Transportation Security Administrator said that he is not going to change his policies plan but childrenunder twelve would not have to undergo the scanners or pat-down (Jones and Frank). As the control increases, there were only 40 scanners at the start of this year to 373 at 68 airports; the TSAunderstands that the controlling with scanners and pat-downs can affect some people’s privacy especially the Muslims (Jones and Frank). That is why TSA requires a type of security in which they are receiving apat-down in private but every traveler must go through some type of security such as scanner or receives the at-down (Jones and Franck). Roth and Flynn security experts note that neither bodyscanner nor pat-downs can detect explosives hidden in the body cavities (Jones and Frank).
