For early biographical sketches see the introductory essay by Urwick in the Storr's edition of General and Industrial Management and the introductory remarks in the Coubrough translation. Urwick hasalso published at least two other pieces on Fayol. See, "Henri Fayol" in the Golden Book of Management: An Historical Record of the Life and Work of Seventy Pioneers (BUS stack HD 31.U73 1963), and"The Function of Administration with Special Reference to the Work of Henri Fayol", in Papers on the Science of Administration (BUS oversize JF 1351.G8). For another brief biographical sketch see p. 39of Vol. 1,The Making of Scientific Management: Thirteen Pioneers (BUS stack HD 31.U75). For a more thorough treatment, refer to Brodie's, Fayol on Administration (BUS stack JF 1351.B67). Forbackground information on the period during which Fayol was managing and writing see, The Miners of Decazeville: A Genealogy of Deindustrialization by Donald Reid (DBW stack HD 8039.M62F869 1985).

Fayolcontinues to be discussed in the current literature. In Real Managers,(BUS stack HD 31.L865 1988) Luthans attempts to "explode the myth" of the classical ideas of Fayol. For a rejoinder to thisinterpretation see Wren's "Was Henri Fayol a Real Manager?" in Best Papers Proceedings: Academy of Management 50th Annual Meeting, 1990, p. 138. (BUS oversize HD 28.A244). Of course Wren also discusses Fayolin his The Evolution of Management Thought (BUS stack HD 30.W73).
