Webber
Research has shown that the surname Webber is of occupational origin, derived from the profession pursued by the originalbearer. Given that occupations were often hereditary during the M iddle Ages such surnames were subsequently adopted by the offspring, thus laying the foundations for the establishment of distinctirreversible family names. The surname Webber enjoys quite a distinct history within the realms of European nomenclature in that it is popular both in the low Countries (Germany, Scandinavia, The Netherlands)and the British Isles where its etymological origins are the same. This development was due not to widespread migration of the late Middle Ages, as is usually the explanation in such cases, but can beaccounted for by the fact that these countries all shared the same basic language, i.e Old Germanic which was a legacy of the Saxon Invasion of Northern Europe which waged from the third to the fifthcentury. As such, the name derives from the O Id Germanic word "weppi” which subsequently became ” weban” meaning "to , weave”. T hus, a ”webber” was a "weaver of cloth” During the M iddle Ages the .manufacture of cloth was a tedious business requiring great skill and p a tie n t. It was carried out in the style of a cottage or home industry and the weaver was a v ita l component of medievalsociety. The name became established in Ireland only after the mid seventeenth century, a period which saw the bestowal of Irish lands and plantations on loyal English and Scottish subjects. I n itspresent form the name is quite uncommon in Ireland where the shortened form of W ebb predominates. T name enjoys a much longer history he in the Old German Empire with one of the earliest written recordsdating to 1290 when one Heinricus dictus W eber was registered as living in Basel.
