Research has shown that the surname Webber is of occupational origin, derived from the profession pursued by the originalbearer. Given that occupations were often hereditary during the M iddle Ages such surnames were subsequently adopted by the offspring, thus laying the foundations for the establishment of distinctirreversible family names. The surname Webber enjoys quite a distinct history within the realms of European nomenclature in that it is popular both in the low Countries (Germany, Scandinavia, The Netherlands)and the British Isles where its etymological origins are the same. I n itspresent form the name is quite uncommon in Ireland where the shortened form of W ebb predominates.
