It was not until 300 yearslater, in 1797, given the beginning of this charming village.
Luquillo is located in the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico in the municipalities of Fajardo and Rio Grand. This region, and Humacao,Fajardo, Loiza and other neighbors, was subjected to constant attacks of Caribs, their traditional allies to enemies against a common enemy Taino, Spanish. Spanish who left Hato de Caparra they entered themountains to reach the coast where they settled down a river of fresh water and Christian.
During the first decades after the conquest were rich gold deposits were exploited. The miners, theyerected a chapel mass around which were built houses. It was a Spanish expedition leader, Don Cristobal Guzman, built a village which was called later Luquillo, derived from the brave cacique Loquillo.They built a village under the patronage of San Juan Obrero, erecting a chapel. The chapel was placed under the patronage of San José de Luquillo. This and the mines were the Native Americans underattack, so the population did not reach significant development in the eighteenth century.
Rosendo Matienzo Cintron (1855-1913) Lawyer and politician. It was a provincial deputy for the district ofMayaguez. He was a member of the Liberal Party but, after several disputes with Luis Muñoz Rivera, joined the Republican Party.
