The EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) and the Zapatista movement.



ANTECEDENTS AND ORIGINS

Causes that originated it:
* Ever since the creation of the Republic of Mexico, the indigenous people have been neglected, mis-treated, and have not been listened to. They felt that the land needed to be redistrubted and felt that thereneeded to be more reforms.
* So they want to create a democratic space for social justice by the indigenous peoples of Chiapas and to demand Mexican State to require attention to the demands of basic services like health, education, water, electricity and Justice.

Period it lasted:
* January 1st, 1994 and still present.

Main places or regions where it took place:
* Chiapas.
*City of San Cristóbal.
* Lacandón Jungle.

DEVELOPMENT

Established the development of the conflict or the movement:
* In Chiapas in 1983 by members ofNational Liberation Forces (FLN). But did not gain any attention until January 1st, 1994

Main events or conflicts since the beginning until the end:
1. January 1st, 1994. They took over the Municipal Palace and declared war the Mexican Federal government and army in what is to be the first of now six Declarations of the Lacandón Jungle.
2. Later these day, the North American Trade Agreementcame into effect, a group of masked members of the EZLN stormed the center of the city of San Cristobal.
3. They freed the prisoners in the jail of San Cristóbal de las Casas, and set fire to several police buildings and military barracks in the area.
4. They took over the Municipal Palace and declared war the Mexican Federal government and army in what is to be the first of now sixDeclarations of the Lacandón Jungle.
5. 1994, second Declaration of the Lacandón Jungle.
6. January 12, 1994. Conflict in San Cristobal.
7. 1995 the EZLN issued a third Declaration and Zedillo ordered thousands of troops into the Lacandón Jungle in an attempt to capture leading members of the EZLN.
8. Beginning of 1996, EZLN released a fourth Declaration of the Lacandón Jungle.9. Since the vetoed the EZLN has sent delegates three times to the Mexico City to lobby for the implication of the San Andrés Accords.
10. The EZLN rejected the modifications by Zedillo’s government.
11. 1997, the EZLN sent 1,111 delegates to attend the founding meeting of the FLZN.
12. 1998 Mexican troops invaded EZLN villages and two autonomous municipalities were dismantled; RicardoFlores Magan and Tierra y Libertad.
13. 1998, EZLN issued the fifth Declaration of the Lacandón Jungle.
14. 2001, Vincente Fox president.
15. A delegation of EZLN marched through seven Mexican states to speak at congress.
16. Subcommander Marcos, the EZLN’s spokesperson, had left Chiapas.
17. Marcos continued to issue several communiqués detailing the EZLN’s grievances withthe Mexican government.
18. the EZLN has worked on establishing several municipalities that have evolved into localized governments.
19. 2005, the EZLN issued the sixth Declaration of the Lacandón Jungle.

Actions taken by the social strugglers:
* Their demands are fairly straight forward. According to the EZLN Communique of June 12, 1994, "the demands of the EZLN are summed up in the11 points affirmed in the Declaration from the Lacondon Jungle: Work, land, shelter, food, health, education, independence, freedom, democracy, justice and peace.
* Their stated demands on the Mexican government include an end to illiteracy, the right to education, the right to dignified jobs, respect for indigenous peoples and cultures, the creation of hospitals, freedom for an independent...
