J.R.R Tolken is the best fantasy novelist in the world, and he introduces us in the magic world of “The Hobbit”. Here, the author involves us in the most awesome adventure: Bilbo Baggins, a fiftyyears old hobbit, is hired as a burglar by Gandalf and thirteen dwarves to go to the Lonely Mountain with them and reclaim his treasure from the dragon Smaug. In this text we will be able to analyze whatis an adventure and which are the elements that characterized it, exemplifying it also with “The Hobbit”.
First of all we need to know that an adventure is an exciting or unusual experience thatcauses a new physical and psychological sense, which can be interpreted as negative or positive. In the beginning of the book, Bilbo is an usual hobbit who deny everything related with adventures,“nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! I can’t think what anybody sees in them” (page 15, chapter 1), but there are others characters that are always in some uncanny business or risky tasks, like Gandalfthe wizard and Thorin, the king of dwarves.
Other important feature of adventures is that all the time the adventurer is meeting people in the way. Some of them are friendly and help him to achievehis conflicts, even so there are others who try to kill him or try to stop him of completing the quest. On the hobbit’s adventure, the road is full of bad creatures like goblins, trolls and giants whotry to kill Bilbo and the dwarves. However, there are others who help them passing difficult moments, like the elves of Rivendel. Here, they meet a half-elf called Elrond, who gives them a place torest and many indications to continue their rout well, “This, Thorin, the runes name Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver in the ancient tongue of Gondolin, it was a famous blade. This, Gandalf, was Glamdring,Foe-hammer that the king of Gondolin once wore. Keep them well!” (page 71, chapter 3).
