Hogwarts In Middle Earth
What comes to your mind when you think about The Lord of the Rings? You probably think about Gandalf-the great wizard with a funny, long beard. Maybe you remember the giantspider that almost kills Frodo. What about when you think about Harry Potter? Do you immediately think about the story, or do you remember Dumbledore, the wise old wizard with his half-moonspectacles? You might also think about the huge spider that scared the living souls out of Harry and Ron…
What comes to mind when you think about these stories can change from person to person. It’s nosecret that both of these stories are literature classics, and that their plot and characters are very different. However, few people realize how many similarities there are between the Harry Potter booksand The Lord of The Rings.
Let’s start with the main characters. Harry Potter is an orphan who lives with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys. Similarly, in The Lord of the Rings, Frodo’s parents aredead and he lives with a relative, Bilbo.
Harry’s nemesis, Lord Voldemort, is introduced as the most dangerous wizard of all time. People fear his name, and call him You-Know-Who. He was once verypowerful and his followers call him ‘’the Dark Lord’’. In the story, Voldemort wishes to regain physical shape, for he ‘died’ while trying to kill Harry. Sauron, the antagonist in the Lord of theRings, is also the most feared creature in Middle Earth. He lacks physical shape but acts through his followers, most of whom are dangerous creatures. When he is mentioned, people suddenly become scared.He is the ‘Dark Lord’ from the Lord of the Rings.
One thing that most people appreciate about Harry Potter is the importance given to friendship. Harry has several friends that help him face evilsince the beginning, he has a best friend that understands him and accepts his choices: Ron Weasley.
