A Value Learned
I met Danoe when I lived in Mexico. We were in kindergarten and since then we have been friends. We didn’t live far from each other; therefore we used to visit each other frequently. At school we were in the same grade and classes for many years. As a result of it, we became good friends. My friend comes from a family with little resources which makes his life harder.Danoe wasn’t able to do some activities when he was a child that most children were able to do or have such as going having nice toys and time to play with them, being able to wear good clothes and having good food; however, he always saw everything with optimism, and this value makes him a good example to follow.
Danoe now lives with his mother, three brothers, two sisters andstepfather. He is the second oldest in the family and consequently was needed to help his mom when he was a child because in that time he didn’t have his stepfather and his mom was not able to support all of them by herself. He helped his mom by working in a bakery in the morning some hours before school and used his oldest brother’s shoes to go to school. When he arrived at school his hair was a messand his shoes were really big on him, many of our classmates made fun of him, but he always ignored their mean comments and found a way to use those mean comments as a way to make people laugh on purpose. He danced with his big shoes and moved his messy hair in front of the class and it was very funny; we loved to see him doing it. At the end of elementary school all our classmates liked him.My friend was never a good student; I imagine it was because most of the time he needed to work before or after school so he was always tired. Also, because his family went to school for only few years, so they didn’t really know enough to be able to help him. Something that I liked about my friend at school was that he tried to study and made an effort to get better grades at school. Most ofthe time he got Ds in his classes and when he was able to get a C it was amazing for him; he would celebrate it as if it were an A. In Mexico many students decide to drop out of school when they are in middle school. My friend knew he was a bad student, and most of our classmates told him to give up with school after all he got always bad grades. Thanks to his optimism he didn’t give up, Danoeknew that even with bad grades he was able to graduate from middle school and he did. Danoe thought about stop studying when he was in his first year of high school because it was harder and he didn’t have enough time for homework and money to pay for it. Nevertheless he decided to stay in school until he was in the last year, feeling proud of himself for being the first of his family to be able toget in that grade. Danoe went back to school two times after he dropped out the first time, but he didn’t succeed at school and wasn’t able to graduate. He decided to take another break and still hopes to go back to school to finish it one of these years.
Danoe and I used to go play some sports with some other friends; sometimes when we had time, we used to go walking to the soccer fieldsbecause they were like fifteen minutes away from where we lived and come back home sprinting. When we were sprinting he was always the last one. We were able to go far from him and hide in a place until he passed us and we walked behind him without him noticing until we called his name; it was funny. Vicente, a friend of ours, said that while playing soccer Danoe could be in front of the goalwithout a goalkeeper and he wouldn’t be able to score, but he would smile at us after missing those big opportunities to score. If we were playing soccer or football outside the house he always hit a person, a car, or a house. We always laughed at him because he wasn’t good playing and his way of running was funny. However, always when we played with him we were able to see a smile on his face when...
