How does ABS work?
Today, majority of cars have got ABS. In the other hand, a big part of users do not know its utility. Much of them think that the system helps to the driver in thebraking, getting stop the car more quickly but this is not quite true, even when there is snow or gravel in the asphalt, ABS can increase the braking length.
The ABS (in German Antiblockiersystem,anti-lock braking system) is a mechanism used in planes and motor vehicles. The system avoids the pneumatic to lose the contact with the landing strip or asphalt during a sudden breaking. At first, the system was created for planes that needed it to break in a short time. Then, Mercedes-Benz developed it the first time to include it in their cars. Now around 75% of cars andsome trucks and big motorbikes are installed, this happens 40 years ago and the basic parts of the system don´t have changed a lot in this period of time since Bosch invented it in 1936.
Itconsists in a bomb added to the circuits of breaks liquid and in detectors that control the revolutions of the wheels. If in a sudden breaking, one or two wheels reduce very quickly theirrevolutions, ABS detects and interprets it like if wheels will came to lock while car is already moving. To avoid this, sensors send a signal to the central of ABS, which reduces the pressure applyin brakes until all is right again. When the system takes part, do it between 50 or 100 times in a minute. ABS lets drivers to preserve the control of their cars so they can avoid theobstacle that caused the wrong situation.
A lot of people think that ABS reduces the break distance but it is not fully certain. An expert driver can stop the car in a 5% or 10% less distancewithout the system. ABS increase the breaking length in the case of normal drivers, but let them preserve the stability, something very important when engineers have to design breaks systems.
