Human Sciences

Human Sciences are sciences thatattempt to reduce the mystery of mankind via studying human behavior in a systematic way.

Human (Social) Sciences include:

* Psychology
* Economics
* Anthropology
* SociologyOBSERVATION

* This is the basis of human sciences.
* All human sciences seek to discover laws and theories about human nature… using observation.

Think about it…

* Towhat extent can human beings be studied in a purely scientific way?
* According to the Theory of Evolution, we descended from apes…and we share 99% of our genes with them.
* We are all made upof the same basic ingredients as all other living things…63% hydrogen, 25.5% oxygen, 9.5% carbon, 1.5% nitrogen…and 5% of a few other things.

Most would say…

* That we are not “justanimals” or “nothing but a bunch of chemicals.”
* There are plenty of differences between us, as people, and the rest of the natural world.
* One of the main differences? We are SELF-CONSCIOUS!While studying Social Sciences…

We will look at the following 4 key aspects of the scientific method:
* Observation
* Measurement
* Experiments
* Laws
And consider what problems arisewhen applied to the study of human beings.
We will also look at the similarities and differences between natural and human sciences.

OBSERVATION

A little reminder…

*Most people would agree that humans have a number of characteristics that differentiate them from other animals.

* Self-consciousness
* Free-will
* Creativity
* Language

*Some people would also say that we have an animating spirit or soul, which cannot be explained in terms of material processes, that further differentiates us from other animals.
