Introduction

Creating a secure networking environment is one ofthe most important tasks that network administrators must perform. Microsoft® ISA Server 2004 is a critical component in creating this secure network. To deploy ISA Server 2004, you must first understand the functionality provided by ISA Server 2004. The first part of this module introduces the core functionality provided by ISA Server 2004. ISA Server 2004 can be configured as a proxy and cachingserver, firewall, and virtual private network (VPN) remote access and gateway server. As well, this module describes the most common deployment scenarios for ISA Server 2004. After completing this module, you will be able to:

Lesson: Introducing ISA Server 2004

Introduction

ISA Server 2004 offers a complete solution for providing an access point between the Internet and the corporate internal network. ISA Server 2004 can operate as a firewall, limiting access to and from the internal organization network. ISA Server 2004 also provides a proxy and caching server enabling access toresources on the Internet to internal network clients. In addition, it provides a virtual private network (VPN) server and gateway providing access to internal network resources. This lesson provides an overview of this core functionality provided by ISA Server, the management interface that is used to administer it, and the differences between ISA Server 2004 and ISA Server 2000.
