The name mountain bike first appeared in print in 1966 as mountain bicycle. The mountain bike was a modified heavy cruiser bicycle used for freewheeling down mountain trails. Thesport started and became popular in the 1970's in Marin county, California, USA.
But it was not until the late 1970s and early 1980s that road bicycle companies started to make mountainbicycles using high-tech lightweight materials. The first mass production mountain bike was the Specialized Stumpjumper produced in 1982.
These bikes are created for off-roadcycling. This activity includes crossing rocks and washouts, and steep declines, on dirt trails, logging roads, and other unpaved roads activities usually called mountain biking. Thesebicycles need to be able to withstand the stresses of off-road use with obstacles such as logs and rocks. The materials most commonly used in the making of these bikes are carbon fiber, titanium, and aluminum alloy. Most mountain bikes use wheels with rims which are more commonly referred to as 26-inch rims.
Wheels used on mountain bikes usually use wide, knobby tiresfor good traction for all terrain and shock absorption. Since 2000 front wheel suspension has become normal and full front and rear suspension has become common. Some mountain bikes arealso fitted with bar ends on the handlebars to give extra leverage to climb hills
Mountain biking can be performed almost anywhere from a back yard to a gravel road, but the majorityof mountain bikers ride off-road trails, whether country back roads, fire roads, or dirt roads. There are types of mountain biking that are more similar to trail running than regularbicycling.
To this day mountain bikeing has been a very popular sport in many countries and of all ages it is a very fun sport to practice and is a great way to keep in shape.
