Cobain was not only the main songwriter forthe band and its musical leader, but also served as its leader and spiritual center.  With the band's success, Cobain became a worldwide celebrity, an uncomfortable position for someone who said,"celebrity is the last thing I wanted to be."
Cobain and Nirvana helped transform popular music in the 1990s.
