21st Century Robin Hood

Screenplay by
Ryan Cody

Based on the short story by

Richard Cody Jr.
Fade in:

INT. FAIRBANK’S HOTEL – DAY

We start at the end of the story.

We see CODY, a forty-ish man who is going grey and has a face ten years older than him due to stress. He is an agent of sorts referred to only by Cody, his last name.

He walks down a hallway on the twelfthfloor of the classiest place in town, Fairbank’s Hotel.

He reaches room 12-C and just stares with a sense of accomplishment.

Cut to black.

CODY(V.O.)
The name Robin Hood may seem a bit
medieval, but believe me, the name
fits this man perfectly.

Fade in:

EXT. SAN FRANCISCO – DAY

The sky is overcast. We see a man leaving his sleazy SanFrancisco apartment. This is JOHN MURDOCK or ROBIN HOOD.

Cody is sitting in his car on the other side of the street. He watches Murdock walk away.

CODY(V.O.)
His real name is John Murdock,
born and raised in Detroit. I’ve
been after him for just about ten
years. That’s because I’m on this
case by myself. If anyonegets in
my way… I’ll kill them. That’s how
enraged I am by this mission.

INT. MURDOCK’S APARTMENT – MINUTES LATER

Cody is lacing the place with microphones.

CODY(V.O.)
But over the years it seems to be
more like a quest than a mission.
I tracked him down to San
Francisco. I had been watchinghim
for a couple of weeks, he rented
some sleazy apartment. I waited
until he left one day, and laced
the place with microphones and
bugged his phone.

Cody places a bug in Murdock’s phone.

INT. CODY’S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Cody is listening intently to a pair of headphones he is wearing. He islistening to a conversation of Murdock’s.

CODY(V.O.)
Fortunately, on June 18th, he made
a phone call to one of his
contacts.

EXT. MURDOCK’S SF APARTMENT – LATER

Cody and two plainclothesmen walk up to Murdock’s front door.

CODY(V.O.)
They were meeting that night which
made it convenient for me becauseI could just catch this guy and go
home.

One of the plainclothesmen jiggles the door knob, it is locked.

CODY(V.O.)
I would have got him right here,
but the damn idiot had to play
games with me.

The plainclothesman shoots out the lock. And opens the door being met with two shots in his face.

CODY
Shit!

Murdockjumps out a nearby window and runs toward a car.

The remaining plainclothesman whips out a cell phone and hits speed dial. Waits a few seconds.

PLAINCLOTHESMAN
Headquarters…

Cody gets into his car as Murdock hotwires the car he got into.

Murdock then speeds off closely followed by Cody.

CODY(V.O.)
He wanted a chase, so I gave him
one.

EXT. SANFRANCISCO - CONTINUOUS – NIGHT

Murdock speeds through the streets, taking back roads and alleyways. The whole time being followed by Cody.

CODY(V.O.)
We went around half the Goddamn
city until, all of a sudden, he
started to slow down…

Murdock slows down and Cody pulls up to his side.

CODY(V.O.)
…So I took advantage of it andpulled up next to him. Probably the
dumbest thing I ever did.

Cody and Murdock ride side by side for a while. Then, suddenly, Murdock sideswipes Cody. Cody goes off into the front window of a car dealership.

CODY(V.O.)
The last thing I remember was
flying through my windshield and
landing on the hood of a Cadillac....
