The Mission- Power over Moral
The movie the mission tells the story about the time when the Spanish gave one of their colonies to the Portuguese in South America. A Spanish Jesuit goes to thewilderness to build a mission and convert the Guarani Indians to Catholicism. At the same time, the purpose of the missions was to save them from slavery, but this would only be possible if the colonywasn’t taken by the Portuguese.
The movie was filmed in 1986 although the actual story occurred on the time of the colonization. This movie takes place in the frontier between Brazil, Argentina andParaguay near the Iguaçu falls. In the story, a catholic father, called father Gabriel (played by Jeremy Irons) devotes his life to the glory of God and to expand Catholicism thought the missions. He beginsconverting Rodrigo Mendoza (played by Robert de Niro) who used to be a slave hunter and who also killed his brother for revenge. Little by little, they gain the trust of the Indians and teach them tobuild homes, play music and sing besides the religion.
Robert de Niro and Jeremy Irons play the roles of the two principal characters. Robert de Niro plays Rodrigo Mendoza and his character is veryinfluential on the impact that the movie causes on the spectators because of the change in personality it experiences. I think the actor plays very good. Jeremy Irons by the other side, plays a SpanishJesuit and plays his role very good as well showing to be a good man at all times. Jeremy Irons (father Gabriel) is very passionate and transmits this throughout the movie.
What I most liked aboutthis movie is that it shows us reality. It shows how the Guarani Indians were killed and at the same time all their talent and faith. It shows how unfair life can be and something I liked as well isthe way the actors play their roles. This movie opens our eyes to reality and how people may become cruel in order to gain power.
