Landmarks
Cliffs: A steep rock face, usually facing the sea. While an active cliff is still subject to the forces of marine erosion, an abandoned cliff is protected from waveattack by a wave-cut platform or by a barrier beach. As the abandoned cliff is exposed to subaerial denudation it becomes less steep, and its upper edge more indented.

Plains: Any relatively level area of the Earth's surface that exhibits gentle slopes and small local relief (differencesin elevation). Occupying slightly more than one-third of the terrestrial surface, plains are found on all continents except Antarctica. Some are tree-covered, and others are grassy. Still otherssupport scrub brush and bunch grass, and a few are nearly waterless deserts.
